It lies about 15\u202fkm southwest of Lyon, nestled between urbanized communes and rural villages, and between the Rh\u00f4ne valley and the plateaus of the Monts du Lyonnais. Its name likely derives from a Celtic root indicating a height or fortified place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The town was historically an old fortified village on the Royal Route (route royale) linking Lyon to Saint\u2011\u00c9tienne, with the Vieux Pont across the Garon facilitating this route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Battle of Brignais (1362)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>During the Hundred Years\u2019 War, Brignais was the site of a major clash on April\u202f6,\u202f1362, known as the Battle of Brignais. Here, bands of unemployed mercenaries (the <em>Grandes Compagnies<\/em>, including the <em>Tard\u2011Venus<\/em>) defeated the royal army of King Jean\u202fII <em>le\u202fBon<\/em>, commanded by Jacques\u202fI of Bourbon, Count of La Marche. The battlefield route remains locally known as the <em>Chemin des Tard\u2011Venus<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Roman Engineering: Aqueduct<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In antiquity, part of the Roman aqueduct of the Gier passed through the area. Built in the 1st\u202fcentury, this aqueduct supplied water from the Pilat hills to Lugdunum (ancient Lyon) and was part of a vast hydraulic system that brought tens of thousands of cubic meters of water per day to the Roman capital of Gaul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Local Heritage &amp; Architecture<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Brignais preserved medieval and later historical buildings and structures \u2014 including its old houses, mills, and religious sites \u2014 that reflect centuries of development from medieval times through the 19th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Prominent Figures Linked to Brignais<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Jean\u202fII <em>le\u202fBon<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 King of France whose army fought in the 1362 battle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Jacques\u202fI of Bourbon, Count of La Marche<\/strong> \u2014 Royal commander at the Battle of Brignais.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Guy de Chauliac<\/strong> \u2014 Celebrated <strong>medieval surgeon<\/strong> and one of the founders of modern surgery; he practiced in Brignais in the 14th century and is commemorated in the historic hospital site.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Administration<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Today Brignais is a commune with over 12,000 residents, governed within the Lyon arrondissement and part of the Vall\u00e9e du Garon intercommunality.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Location &amp; Geography Brignais is a commune in the Rh\u00f4ne department in the Auvergne\u2011Rh\u00f4ne\u2011Alpes region of eastern France.
