L’hôpital de Brignais

Around 1345, Guy de Chauliac, one of the founding figures of modern surgery and author of the Chirurgia Magna, practiced medicine in Brignais. The medieval hospital stood outside the town walls, forming a quadrilateral between today’s rues Casse-Froide, de la Giraudière, du Bief, and des Rouliers.

The complex included a pharmacy, a chapel dedicated to Saint Margaret, service rooms, and gardens designed for patients’ recovery walks.

In 2022, the site was revived as the Espace Guy de Chauliac, a cultural and exhibition venue linking Brignais’ medical heritage with contemporary artistic life.

Location: Espace Guy de Chauliac, 6 Pl. Guy de Chaulhiac, 69530 Brignais
